Cub Cadet (102) Electrical Drain

My 102 has a draw on the battery when it is off with the key out. If I leave the battery connected it goes dead in a few days. Does anyone have any ideas about troubleshooting this type of problem? Is one of the electrical parts typically bad (solenoid, regulator, switch) when this occurs? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks...Greg

Be sure it is not the battery gone bad by disconnecting the positive cable, then testing between the terminal and the positive cable with a volt-ohm meter set on 12 VDC. You should get no reading with the ignition switch off.

If you do get a readin, it could be a short to ground because a wire has bad insulation. Common causes: A bad solenoid also will cause a drain, as will a bad ignition switch. Only way to tell for sure is to patiently start testing wires first. On ohms, disconnect each end of each wire and then test with one lead grounded to frame and one lead touching one end of wire. Check the ignition switch with the wires unplugged for any leakage across the terminals while the switch is off. Put one lead on the common temrinal and test the start and then the run terminals. If all is well, you can be pretty sure it is the solenoid (magnetic switch).

I'm emailing you a wiring diagram to help out.

Also check between the terminal and battery case, these little batteries are famous for going directly to ground with just the slightest contamination on the case.
