Towards the end of the last mowing season The 46" mower deck was getting noisier than usual and it wasn't doing as good of a job. It's been noisy ever since I've owned it(4 years) but I could tell a difference. I have the deck off now and after taking the sheilds and belt off I found that there was a lot of build up under the shivs and some of it was pretty tight. Could that be the problem? How do you go about checking the bearings? There is a slight wobble but not excessive. All the bearings are sealed, so a grease gun ain't gonna help. Thanks, HJ.

the bearings should not have any play in them at all , if there is play they are done . you need to remove the pulleys off the top and remove the spindle shafts if they are in good shape the bearings can be replaced very easily and a majority of the them are part # 202ss which is a bca bearing no. usually take 2 per spindle at about 5.00 to 7.00 ea. thats if they dont hose you. hope this helps .

MzGadget mows with a JD240 that carries that same 46" deck... It was getting noisy. Cost me about $30 a spindle to but it was worth it... That is the quietest, smoothest running deck I own. (And I got a bunch!) Gadget

I think since I gor the deck off which isn't as easy as my mom's LX 188 to take off, I'm goint to fix what ever might need it. Handsome Jim

Allow me to add that I had another item to repair on my deck also. It was literally eating belts and I could not figure out why. I finally discovered that there is a frame crossmember that sit just above the double sheeve pulley that drives the deck. Every bounce saused that edge of the upper pulley to hammer itself against that crossmember. The width of the "V" was considerably narrower that it was supposed to be and the edge was also burred up some. That's what was chewing up the belts. I bought a kit with the pulley and bearings from JD for about $70 (pricey) and curred the problem.

By the way, there's two ways to buy that. AS a complete unit, and as individual parts. Believe it or not, the individual parts were cheaper than the unit...I figured I could press the bearings myself! Gadget
