I've got a '68 Bolens Husky 850, and more importantly I've got the manuals for it.
The engine manual contains an insert sheet which indicates that as of August 1965 the standard wiring circuits for all 12 volt electrical equipment will be negative ground polarity instead of positive ground.
All 6 volt systems will remain positive ground.
Glancing over the manual I see stuff like "magneto ignition spark" and "magneto breaker point adjustment" if that helps. For this particular engine (Wisconsin S-8D) the coil was either Wico or Fairbanks-Morse made.
If you want more information let me know. I can scan these relevant pages and send them to you if you like, or drop them somewhere for you to pick up. I'm going to scan all my manuals eventually but I haven't got around to it yet.

Cheers,
Rob
