I have an 18HP Kohler engine in a Cub 1862, 800 HR. It looks like I broke a connecting rod. I pulled one head. The engine runs with a dead miss. The piston on one bank ddoes not move. Any guess what I will find when I crack open this engine?
I understand that this is a common problem.
Thanks for the help!!

Thanks for the replys. I am not running it. It was a VERY cold day when this happened. It wasn't running right, loud exhaust noise, then BANG, dead miss. I drove it into the shed and have not started it. I have most of evrything disconnected and am ready to unbolt from the frame.

I too am rebuilding an M18S. The JD 317 didn’t have an engine so I had to find one. The replacement engine is $1500.00. A little sticker short to anyone's eyes. I finally found an 18HP Kohler with a sizable hole in the block where it threw a rod. However I thought I could have it patched. The hole was too big. Then I called to see how much just a short block would be. Get this $1300.00 for just the block. About $200.00 difference for a new engine? So I did some more scouting and found another M18S with a bad valve. So $100.00 for motors, $300.00 in parts and machining, then I’ll have a “new” motor. Moral of the story? Your tractor’s gold take car of it. Explore your options.

If you are lucky, a bunch of pieces - all from the connecting rod. I just broke one open and had just that. I replaces both rods, pistons, and rings for about $250 and it runs like a champ. My engine was a Kohler M18.

If you are unlucky, you will find pieces of the head and or block. In which case one or both may have to be replaced. I wouldn't run the engine on one cylinder. Pieces of the rod could cause additional damage.
