Excessive steering wheel play. How does one remove the steering gear box to find out what causes the problem, and is it reqired to remove the steering wheel in the process ,also does anyone know where a replacement
steering gear box can be found or a similar one
to replace the present one if the internal parts
are broken

You must lift up the front end and remove the gearbox out the bottom of the tractor, the pin and arm in the gearbox are replaceable, and also the front axle pivot usually has alot of play along with the L.H. spindle arm.

Ed, Let me tell you what the problem was with my LGT165's steering. First the axle pivot bushings and shaft were worn which allowed the axle to move back and forth each time you moved the wheel. I replaced the bushings and used a GR 8 bolt in place of the original shaft. Some prior owner had replaced the spindle arm roll pin with a bolt and this added more "play" to the steering. I replaced the bolt with a new roll pin and that cured that problem. The steering is almost perfect now. I'm not saying this is your problem (I have an LGT125 that does have some play in the steering box), but check these other areas first. Just a little play in the axle pivot makes a lot of difference. BTW, a lot of people do not know that there is a grease fitting on the steering box. You have to get right down under the tractor to see it. Good luck; I hope it's not the box as I understand finding a good used one is nearly impossible and new parts are very expensive.
