I have an opportunity to purchase a 1991 Cub Cadet 1861. Any oppinions on the strengths and weaknesses of this tractor? How does it compare to a new model? Is the hydraulic deck lift a reliable unit? Are attachments readily avaiable? Where can I get more info? Thanks for your help, Tom.

Did you ever buy the 1861? I, too, am looking at an 1861 with 260 hours. It appears to be in good shape, and they're asking $2000. What do you think?

Tom,

I have a Cub 1863 which I'm sure has just a few more options than the one your looking at. The Kohler V-Twin that comes with yours is a awesome motor! Whatever you do though, DO NOT OVERFILL THE OIL, as I accidentally did (blown head gasket). I don't know what size mowing deck comes with yours (mine has a 54"), the bigger the better unless you have tons of tree's to cut around. How much are you going to pay for this one? I paid $2500 for mine back in 2000 and it had 473 hours on the engine. I have had no major problems and the tractor is built very solid. I think you'd be happy as long as everything looks and sounds good and the price is right. I have never had any problems with the hydralic lift on mine. I'm pretty lucky in that the Cub dealer is only 1.5 miles down the road from me. Parts are readily available and if they don't have them in stock they have them the next day! This tractor really books when you need to get back to the house to catch a great play on the TV.
