I just had a 16 HP CAST Iron Briggs overhauled. Crankshaft welded and turned.New valves and .020 O/S piston. It ran pretty good before the overhaul but now it starts hard and gallops from a normal idle speed up another 100 rpm and then returns to normal. It has been running with a little atom electronic ignition replacing the original points and condensor for many years. I even replaced the electronics to see if it would make a difference in the tractors performance. The carb has not been cleaned or changed since I purchased it in 1976. Any folks out there with some ideas on what could be the problem I will be grateful for your suggestions.

Thanks

I'd change the filter first and blow out the line to the tank. Mix a bit of carb gum out
solution and premium gas and pour that in the tube to the carb. Put a little more gum out in the tank. On filters, try to get one of the bowl type that allow sediment and water to settle out of the way of flow. These are better I feel. At end of season you can simply dump out old gas and dirt from the IN tube of the filter and let it hang downwards to let it dry over the winter. Reinstall it back on for the following year.

Let the engine run and get hot, and after awhile you should notice the engine start to try to clear itself as the solution eats out the crud and varnish in the carb.

Thats what I did on my roper 16 when the engine started to give me problems, works great now.

If that doesn't work or gets worse do a carb kit.

Thanks Bluelite, I cleaned and changed the filters before. Yesterday I adjusted the float cause she was leaking a little fuel out of the carb. I started her and ran around the yard for 1/2 hr or so and the old girl is getting better. Maybe she just needs a little running to get the kinks out. (Kinda like me)

I have an eight H.P. B&S and had a similar problem . Tried the governor linkage cleaning & adjustment and also the carburetor cleaning and adjustment and they both helped a little for a short period of time but the real fix was a new spark plug even though the old one looked fine. I also increased the heat range from a Champion 77 to an 82.

Have you made sure governor linkage is connected in same holes in levers as it was originally?

Guys, I appreciate your interest and replys. I am not sure because the carb and the linkage was installed by the engine rebuilder. If that is a requirement, where can I find the information that will get me on the right track on how to hook it up?

Thanks Don

Don, any binding or friction will cause the governor to act up like you describe. Since you only mention idle, I'll only talk about that.

A lean idle (possible vaccume leak?) can cause this. If the carb and engine sat for a while, then might be you just have a little varnish in the idle circuit. Set it a little richer if the choke trick below fixes your low speed gallop.

To determine what to go after, try a little choke, if the idle steadies out, set it a little richer. If it continues to hunt, then make sure all the linkage is free.

If that all checks out, then move the spring down closer to the governor shaft and take some of the sensitibity out of it. Also at dead idle, there should be no governor action. Might be your throttle control isn't really letting the engine go all the way to idle where the throttle plate just sits on the speed screw. Still, it shouldn't hunt even with some throttle (tension on the spring).

I appreciate the information TractorLew! I have made a stop at NAPA to get a new carb gasket kit and will install tomorrow and give all the suggestions a try If the cleaning and new kit doesn't do the trick.

Here is the rest of the story!!. The problem was the electronic ignition!! I re-checked the instructions received with the unit, and it said,"this module can not be used with a flywheel that has more than 1 magnet group". Mine has 2! I installed a new set of points and condensor and the old girl runs like a new colt. I still don't understand how she ran with the electronic ignition for so many years before the overhaul with no trouble .I guess I was just lucky and maybe a freak of nature.

I want to thank all you folks for your interest and replys to my plea for help!!! Don
