Craftsman Garden Tractor Noise

I have a couple year old Craftsman garden tractor with a 20 HP Kohler engine. I have noticed this winter when the engine is cold I hear a clicking sound in the engine. After it is running for a while, it goes away. I have the 5W-30 oil in it for plowing snow.

I don't recall hearing this at all during the summer, and want to know what this noise is.

Any ideas.

It probley is ice frozen on the fly wheel and is hitting your top plate and making a clicking noise. You said it does not make the noise in the summer. And after a While of using the mower in the winter the sound stops.

Sometime in the winter take the top cover off the mower and see if you see ice.

I have the 18.5 HP model. It makes the same noise in the summer, under load. I have always assumed it was engine knock, although I am not aware of any means to adjust timing. I have never had any adverse effects and have been running it since new in '98.
