Sometimes I have bad luck or no luck at all but last Saturday I took a KO punch of good luck. A friend told me his elderly neighbour had a garden tractor for sale. He asked me what kind of snowmobiles I collected and I told him Massey Fergusson and he said he thought thats what the tractor was. I asked him to find out the price and he got back to me on the Monday ...$500. I said I would buy it sight unseen as he had described it. I went and got it...1970 10 horse Massey Fergusson, with 42"mower, a Massey Fergusson 630 factory dozer blade and a set of tire chains. The chap had it in his garage covered with a blanket. When I got it home there was a fellow in the yard at the farm waiting to see me and when he saw the mower on the trailer he asked if I had had it out getting painted!! The tractor starts right up , purrs like a kitten ,is as clean as the day it came off of the assembly line and barely a scratch after 32 years. The decals on the mower deck are like new. The guy in my yard looked at it and told me he'd go $700 if I wanted to make a quick buck...right!! That's the best stroke of luck I've had in a while...let 'er snow I've got Ski Whizs and a tractor and blade!! Mike in Exeter Ontario

That's a good deal. I got a great deal on my Sears Custom 7(there's a picture on the garden tractor photo page) - FREE! My friend was moving to Georgia, he told me to come and get it rather than haul it all the way to GA. Just needs headlights and some wiring, runs like a champ! Take care, Fireman

Mike, I didn't cheat anyone, if you read my post carefully you will see that a neighbour told me about the tractor and I asked the price. I was told by my friend that he wanted $500, so I said I would take it "sight unseen". I paid the man exactly what he asked for his tractor and in my dealings with him he was happy that it was going to a good home, I even invited him to come down to the farm whenever he felt like it. Although he is an older gentleman he was not senile, I was elated that I got a good deal and he was happy with the five 100 bills that I gave him. If you wish to discuss ethics you should learn to not judge others without knowing the facts, I never cheated anyone, my christian principles would prevail

Mike, leaving the question of religion entirely out of it, I agree with your assessment that the old gentleman was not cheated.

The fair price of any given thing is the amount that the buyer agrees to buy for, and the seller agrees to accept, at a given point in time. You and the seller reached that agreement, and neither was under duress to agree. That's what happens at auctions.

I collect IH Cub Cadets. I have seen Cub Cadet parts and accessories selling in the collector market climb in value to unreal levels when the stock market was going strong and everybody had work, then crash back to what I call reasonable levels since the economy went bad. But there are still certain items that bring many, many times their value of just a few years ago in that marketplace. It all goes back to what the seller will sell for, and what the buyer will pay, at any given point in time.

Jim, thank you, you have made me feel better that an impartial third party agrees. I don't see how anyone could interpret what I posted as cheating someone and the term "I stole it" is only a figure of speech. A "steal" only refers to a good buy! Mike in Exeter Ontario.

The old guy (if original owner)probably only paid about $700 for it new.So he may feel that he took you as a fool for paying that much.I have a 1971 MF12,good heavy built tractors.

Congratulations, I know how you feel, and I think it is good for all out there to let us know about their good fortune. As we all know this is quite an expensive hobby. About two months ago I bought a John Deere 170 lawn tractor for $150.00. It was covered in dust, yet decided to gamble. Took it home, cleaned it up, and the 12.5 Kawasaki fired first time and runs like a top. Had two good bagger attachments thrown in. I have a tear in the seat, but all else works perfect. Of course, you did not cheat anyone. You got something you wanted at, what you considered, a good price! The fella you bought it from, might be thinking, "boy, wonder why he didn't dicker. I would have let it go for $100, less..... Good Luck Art

Art, You are right, one never knows what a person will take. They wanted $300.00 cash for the 160, but said they would take bids and if it didn't sell then they would consider bids. Someone supposedly bid $225.00 and didn't follow through with the deal, and took mine. I would liked to have bought it at $50.00. Paul
