I am consering a John Deere GT235 with a 44" Piranha or 48" deck with mulch kit. I have about 3.5 acres of grass to cut. One dealer suggests the Piranha and others are dead set against it. Will the 48" do a similar job as far as speed and grass height to cut? Or will the Piranha be faster? I was also told the rear discharge of the Piranha puts grass clippings on the belts?
One more thing, why not get the Scotts from Home Depot with a larger 25 HP engine and 54" deck?
I'm new at this so I appreciate the input, thanks. Any other brands that you would suggest?

If you are interested in the BEST mulching deck on the market, then my answer is neither. Deere's Freedom 42 dedicated mulching deck in probably the best mulcher out there, even doing a decent job on wet grass (same price as the 6 blade Piranha deck). BUT..... ..... ...(as noted by the other poster), 3.5 acres is a lot of mowing for a 42, 44, or even a 48" deck. The GT235 can be equipped with a 54" deck as well, although that size deck may start to push the limits of the 18HP Vanguard. If you are on a tight budget, want to buy new, and are not interested in any duties beyond mowing and pulling a medium cuty cart - then the Scotts or equivalent Sabre 2554 models with the 54" deck may be a good fit. Not in the same league as the Deere GT series (or vs. other premium GTs), but a decent buy for it's purpose.

If you have other chores or if your land is hilly and or rough, than you may want to even consider the current 300 series (now called GX for 2002). Other good models to consider in the Deere GT - 300 range are the Cub Cadet 3000 series (3206, etc), the Simplicity Prestige, or Kubota TG or G series. You may also want to consider a good used premium unit if you need a garden tractor.

As far as going to Home Depot and buying a Scots, if it's cheap you want, And thats just what Scots is. You can probably go to Wal Mart and get something even cheaper. And the service after the sale will be just as good, non existant.HJ

With 3.5 acres I think you'll want the largest deck you can find. I was using a 48" for about two acres and it took over two hours to mow. Now I'm using a modified 88" and the yard has just been expanded to over three acres and it takes about 1.5 hours to mow, and that is mulching it which I firmly believe in for building up a good soil base.

From a 48" to an 88" deck? That IS one heck of a jump. Tell us more about the 88" deck. Who makes it?
