Knowing that I will have to replace the ser.1 Kohler on my 317JD, I would like to get suggestions on alternate engines that others have had good luck with. It frustrates me to no end that they want sooo much $ for the ser 2 Kohler! I have a sm. machine shop at home (lathe, tig and mig welder, sheet metal brake....)and am a mechanic by trade. I can adapt most any engine that would fit under the hood. A 2 cyl diesel sounds interesting, but I dont know why. I would just like to have a smooth, quite and dependable engine to install, that would cost a bit under the $1400-1500 that they want for the Kohler. The 317 is used mostly for mowing, draging the pasture with spike harrow, and pulling the horse and car trailers around the property. The grass is very light here (read, desert)so the HP requirements are a bit over stated. The ser 1 engine should last the rest of the summer (scored and or cracked piston on the rt side), so it is time to start shopping for the replacement engine now. If you were to build the 317 of your dreams, what engine would you use?
Many thanks for any suggestions,
Dave

I recommend a Kohler engine. Almost anything manufactured in that time period was crap i.e. Ford and Chevy cars, small applincnces etc. Everyone was trying to save money, and it didn’t pay off. The Kohler Magnum is a clone to the KT series. I’m sure you could find a M20 if you looked hard enough. That’s a motor that just bolts up. You can’t beat that. That way you don’t have to deal with taking 3” out of the frame and having to make a sub-frame because now it can’t take the weight of the new motor. Then the deck won’t fit because of the sub frame. I have a 317 with a fresh M18S for about $1700.00 less then a repower motor. I looked all around town and found 3 M18S for “cheap” prices. Rebuilt it and now I have an awesome mower, tiller, and dirt pusher.

What make is this M20 and M18s, are they Kohler?
I have been quite pleased with the Kohler, but am iritated by the fact that they are capitalizing on the fact that so many went bad, and adjusting the prices to reflect that. Putting 1500+ into a 20yr old garden tractor makes one question the investment. I know you cant replace it for that kind of $ now day, and get an equal product, but that dosnt make it hurt any less. I guess I was thinking that maybe the Honda twin or??? might be equally quite and reliable at a much reduced cost, thus making it worth the time and effort to graft in place.

Dave, If you try this, let me know. I am interested in making some type of engine work for my old JD317 with a bad piston. -karl kellasse@Mhtc.net
