I've got a Briggs 18.5 hp Intek V-twin in a Craftsman mower. This will be the 3rd season for it. It starts and runs pretty well, but sometimes starts sputtering like it's missing. Also, when I first put a load on it (start the mower deck), it starts a pattern of revving up and down, just like i was playing with the throttle. I've changed the fuel & air filters, & plugs. Another thing I've noticed is that one of the valve covers is clean, the other is loaded with greasy gunk. I've checked that cylinder for spark, and it's good. Other than this, the motor runs great, but I'm afraid I may be tearing something up. Could I have some kind of valve trouble? Any advice would be appreciated.

Steve when the engine is " Hunting " ,the governer is not set up right-1 first clean out ALL the birds and gunk on all of the air cooled areas, could be restricting a proper air flow to the air governer then check that the spring is hooked up to the air gov. This also could be the setting in the float being too high,as you are getting too much fuel ,so the engine speeds up till it burns off the fuel, then slows down, also could be a pin hole or tear in your fuel P/P .the diaphram generally can be replaced very easily.Hope this gets ya going .LILJON PS you might also tighten up the gov. spring as it might be a little weak over aperiod of time due to excessive heat/overheated on the "gunky"side

I KNOW THIS MAY BE HARD TO BELIEVE BUT THE PROBLEM MAY BE WITH THE MUFFLER! IS THE MUFFLER DIRECTLY BELOW THE AIR FILTER COVER. IF THE TUBES THAT RUN FROM THE MOTOR TO THE MUFFLER ARE LOOSE FITTING INTO THE POT THE EXHAUST IS BEING SUCKED INTO THE AIR FILTER AND PLUGGING IT WITH CARBON.IF YOU CHANGE THE FILTER AND PLUGS AT THE SAME TIME MOTOR WILL RUN FINE FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS THEN START THE PROBLEM AGAIN,,B&S VANGAURD MOTOR IS SO EFFICEINT (BECAUSE OF EPA ) THAT THE AIR FILTER WILL LOOK OK BUT IT IS PLUGGED WITH HYDRO CARBONS-MUFFLER WAS PROVIDED BY SEARS AND NOT B&S

Hey! Thanks for the tip. Yes, the muffler does sit directly under the breather, and yes, the exhaust tubes that go into the muffler unit are loose fitting. I'm gonna throw on a new air filter to test this theory. If that's it, can anything be done about it? I thought about maybe sealing those joints with JB Weld, but I really hate to. Should a good cleaning with gasoline get the bad stuff out of the filter? Finally, do you know if Sears is acknowledging this issue, and what their remedy is? Thanks again for the help!!
