I have a Craftsman 42" lawn tractor model number
917.271013 that will not start. I get no click when the key is turned. I replaced the battery, and no click. I used a meter and looked for voltage on the heavy red lead on the starter, and found nothing. I verified that the seat safty switch was good. Verified the 30 amp fuse was good. What else do I check and how.

I had a similiar problem. I check all safety switched, starter parts and so forth. I found out the key switch as faulty. If left outside moature gets into the switch and causes corrosion. I replaced the switch and mine works fine. The switch cost about $20.00. Hope this helps

I had the same problem last week. I had to replace the battery cables and it's running great now.

Just had to put a soloniod on mine today. It was doing the I won't start click and tried the jumper cable to starter from battery(positive) to see if starter was good, it was. Solonoid was 15 bucks and she started right up!

First, check the starter. Put the tractor in neutral, disengage clutch and apply brakes, chock the wheels or disconnect the plug. Connect one end of a jumper cable to the hot terminal on the battery and touch the other end to the large terminal on the starter, if you get a big spark and the starter spins it's probably good. Then check the solenoid. If it clicks (Assuming the click is from the solenoid), and the starter doesn't spin, you probably have a bad solenoid or starter cable.

Due to grass clippings, vibration and wear some of the safety switches might not be functioning. Put a voltmeter across each switch. The voltmeter should read 0V or close to 0V when you turn the key. Higher voltage means that switch it not doing its job. Otherwise, put a jumper across each switch to eliminate the bad one. Just don't leave the bypass in place.
Or ship the tractor to me. I would love another machine for my Dad to use to cut the grass

Sounds like a safety switch that isn't completely tripped. Try playing with the mower engagement lever and clutch/brake pedal while turning the key, you will most likely get it to atleast click or turn over. Once you find the one givng you problems, investigate whether it needs adjustment, replacement, or wire repair. Just a sugestion.

I had one of these and the wire broke to the belt engage switch fixed the wire and ok. I am assuming that you have a meter? Check for voltage at the small terminal on the solenoid when the key is turned to start If none check switches and the key switch. If you have voltage at small term. and none on the wire going to starter solenoid is bad.

My lawn tractor won't start. The starter spins. I cleaned the battery terms. The plugs look ok. I checked the carb, gas is going in when trying to start. I tried starting fluid. Nothing. I seems as though there is not a spark to the fuel. I looked at the plugs but I don't understand how they work. They look electronic. HELP! I love this tractor, but I cannot get it started. Any suggestions???? HELP!

Never mind!
I figured it out. The bushing in the starter blew out, causing movement in the starter. The wire components in the starter began rubbing/hitting against the magnets in the housing unit. As a result, the magnets broke, the starter froze, and then burned up.
The symptom seemed like a dead or dying battery, causing a weak attempt to start. If you have a good battery and it appears that the engine/starter is hesitant to start, pull your stater and inspect it.
