To whom it may concern: I have a 317 with an Onan P218G engine. Since it is a replacement, I think it has the kit to change the configuration from the original Kohler setup to the Onan. My problem: The frame was broken near the bottom of the stearing column in two places. I had it welded in place later discovering the universal was broken and had to take it apart anyway. It also wore a little of the bottom of the stearing column so I replaced it. The problem I have now is that it rattles (on hills etc.) like the drive shaft is hitting something (?) and I think it's the frame but I can't be sure. Since it's running great in all other respects, I'm trying to decide whether I tear it apart and reweld the frame (Two left hands...have to hire someone) or replace the frame. If I replace the frame, do I have to make sure I buy one that's been modified for an Onan or are they all the same? The one that's in there now seems to have been cut on the driver's left side near the bottom of the grill. Any help or advice would be welcome. Sorry I'm so long winded. Have already asked a guy name Mark from Fla. who has one to sell but the shipping would break the bank and I'm not sure it will fit. Thanks, J. Allen

I still have my original 317 & I am not a 317 expert but I had a similiar problem years ago. I traced it to the PTO shaft hitting on a frame cover. Take the seat, deck & gas tank out & you can check it. I had to loosen the bolts & reposition the frame. It also happened on hills.

Good Luck Jerry, WA

Hi Jim. Yes, there was a conversion kit that included some parts and templates for notching the frame out. So, for a direct bolt together job, you would need a 317 frame that had been converted for the Onan. One other option is to buy a regular 317 frame, compare yours to it (and do some measuring) and make the necessary modifications, since you have a converted frame to compare it to. Anyway, I hope this helps.
