Bouncy ammeter

The ammeter on my Bolens 850 bounces back and forth on the scale so much that it's basically impossible to read. I've never had a dead battery problem but if the ammeter is not supposed to do this then maybe I'd replace it anyway. Is it possible it's shot, or maybe it's not compatible with the tractor for some reason?

Thanks... Rob

When I converted my A-C WD-45 to 12 volts, the ammeter did the same thing you described. I thought it was the regulator, then the alternator; changed both and still same "jumpy" needle. I finally replaced the cheapy ammeter with a good one and my problem was solved. Apparently, the good gauges are vibration resistant. When I held the cheap meter in my hand and tapped the side with a screwdriver, the needle jiggled easily. I did the same with the "Stewart-Warner" gauge and the needle hardly moved at all. I hope your problem is as easily solved.

Especially on older model tractors, the vibration eventually wears out the bezel the needle pivots on. Then the needle bounces.

The ammeter on my AC 716H does the same thing. I'm not sure if other tractors have the same problem.
