I have a 14hp kohler engine that ran fine last fall but skip, backfires and blows back through the carb. I replaced plug and wires, points and condenser and cleaned carb. I know the points govern the timing so I tried 020 and then tried
.005 on either side of .020.

I haven't tried the coil. The spark looks good but I'm convinced its electrical

Any help?

If it backfires through the carb the intake valve is either sticky, burnt or both.

Any chance the flywheel key is partially sheared? It'll knock the timing out of whack and cause all sorts of weird problems.

Sounds like the valves need adjusting.

Sounds like the exhaust valve is sticking. Try some Marvel Mystery Oil.

If it worked fine before and misses after it set up, I would check the following:
1. Drain the water from the carb bowl.(condensation).
2. Drain the water from the fuel tank. (condensation).
3. Lubricate the valve,(marvel oil, transmission oil, wd 40, diesel, etc.
4. Pull the head off, see if valve is bent, lightly tap on high side of valve with small hammer to restraighten valve, dont hit it too hard or you'll break the valve.
5. Take the points off, unwind the coiled spring of the points, flatten the spring, rewind the spring (it may have lost its tension).
6. Take it back to the manufacturer and tell them we've had enough with planned obsolesence. Tell them to make it good or we sue.
