The Dipstick on my (newly acquired) 147 Cub (14 hp Kohler) has a tendency to fall out. It just isn't held in place very firmly.

This happened once when my wife was mowing and she was annoyed because it got oil sprayed all over her shoes.

I was more concerned about the engine than her shoes, though. It didn't loose much.

Should I replace the O-Ring to make it fit tighter or what? Yes, I recently had the valve cover/breather off to adjust the valves, and I am pretty sure I got it back together right. I noticed the "top" indications on internal parts, and I assembled it so the reed valves close on crancase vacuum (e.g. piston rising).

The engine runs fine, with no smoke. The dipstick is just a little loose.

I got a flat washer with the hole the same size as the widest part of the dipstick. Then I sawed through one side with a hacksaw a space wide enough that the narrow part of the dipstick would slide through. I then slipped it on to the dipstick between the rubber washer and the top of the dipstick and turned it 90 degrees. This will compress the rubber and make it larger around so that it will fit tight in the oil fill tube. By turning the washer 90 degrees and the pressure from the compressed rubber washer, the flat metal washer will not come off the dipstick and fall down into the engine. I havew not had any problems since I did this to mine.
