Briggs 12Hp backfires or misses going up hills

I just purchased a used 12 Hp wards riding mower, and I have one problem - I can't get the carb tuned to go up the hills in the back yard without missing or backfiring. I completely went through the carb and put in all new parts (a carb kit), but that didn't appear to help. It appears that when the engine starts to lug and the governor calls from more fuel on, the problem appears.

From my research, it sounds like I should check the flywheel key for timing issues and also check compression.

If anyone has other suggestions, please let me know.

Thanks...
Nick

Check your points, condenser&point gap while your checking the flywheel key.My 8 hp was doing the same thing and then would quit.If I let it sit a while it would run a while longer and quit again. Good Luck
