My 782's engine(kt17s spec 24173) is on it's way out....knocking. Original engine and never any problems. Any advice on what to bolt on instead without too much modification? I could overbore it and rod it but if what I'm hearing about these early 17s is correct, I'd rather just upgrade the engine and mow another 20yrs with it. Your thoughts?

the cub cadet part number for the short block is
KH-52-522-98 and lists for 1469.53
BUT
the cub cadet part number is also the kohler part number 52-522-98
call a local kohler engine distributor and try to get a better price

thanks
mark

Rob, I also have a 782 that fortunately is still running fine with the original engine. Please post your final decision with your engine. Like you I have wondered what I would do if something happened to my old engine. I am very careful with the oil level and so far so good (960 hours). I will never get rid of the tractor though, I really like it! Good Luck, Mark R.

Kohler Magumn 18HP or M18S. Or 20HP M20S. Plug and play. No differance. However the PTO size is not the same. 1 1/8" rather then 1", but a 75.00 used cluch and motor is cheeper then a KT17S. I have a JD317 so I've been there.

Well if your engine has lasted that long, you are one of the lucky ones. As long as you dont really have any steep grades, you should be able to get another 20 years on a good rebuild. But if you were planning on spending over $1500, you can get a series II KT17 engine with pressurized oil system.
