I've noticed that the belt seems loose on my 48" mower deck.It cuts ok but makes a lot of noise from the belt deflection, which I measured at 3" side to side by looking at the scuff marks the belt makes on the deck.Previous owner said the tractor hadn't been run for 2 years.Pulleys seem ok and the idler pulley seems to work good.Do I just need to try a new belt or is there some other adjustment(s) I need to know about?

Are you sure it's the correct belt?

Not sure,Glenn. No numbers visible on the belt.Gonna go ahead and replace it with a new I.H. belt since I don't know how long it's been on there. Thanks

I had a 1969 -126 for about 25 years ...My grandfauther was a "IH" dealer...I found that I had to use "IH" belts..They are just enough different that others like GATES would not holdup.....I learned that on the small gen,/srarter belt.....it ate the GATES belt in just a short time....The first thing you need to do is remove the deck belt and check the side to side and end play in each of the three pulley bearing sets...you do this by turning the deck over and see if there is any slop inthe bearing adjustment or maybe they need to be replaced....do the simple things first...make sure the blades are balanced..My guess is thats the problem!
