I bought a 165 hydro last year from a dealer who said they went thru and completely tuned up. It runs great and does a good job IF you can ever get it started. I started last night first time this season. New battery and had to crank on starter for 15-20 minutes before it popped off. It ran great then for about 10 minutes mowing till I got on hillside and leaned enough for kill switch to activate. Then no matter what it would not start. When taking off air filter there doesn't appear to be hardly any fuel in the carb throat. Any ideas would be great.

Larry - Here's a few things to check. Take the fuel cap off and see if the tractor starts any easier. Sometimes the vent in the cap becomes clogged, causing a vacuum to develop that prevents fuel from flowing properly. If that does the trick, pick up a new cap from the dealer.

Also, check the fuel filter. You might just want to replace it anyway, since they are fairly inexpensive.

The fuel tank may have debris plugging the outgoing fuel line. This requires some care in back-blowing the fuel line. But then, if the debris is not removed, it will most likely plug things up again.

Those are the easy things. Here's some other possibilities:

You may have stale or bad gas. The float in the carb may be defective (not allowing gas in). I'm not familiar with the carb on the 165, so I don't know if there is a float adjustment, but if there is, it could be out of wack. The carb itself may be in need of an overhaul. The fuel pump could be at fault. Choke might be sticking. It's also possible that the timing is off or you are not getting enough spark (coil problem). Hope this gives you some ideas to work with. - Dave

Make sure the choke is closing all the way. Those kawasaki's won't start work a darn unless the choke closes all the way. Take the choke and push it all the way closed, and grab the linkage and make sure it won't move any farther. if it will, spread it at the v part of the linkage making it wider. If this doesnt help, you could have a fuel problem or a ignition problem .165's have an ignitor on the side of the motor by the oil fill tube that will fail sometimes, Very expensive. I work for a john deere dealer and have had a 160, same as a 165 but gear drive. let me know what happens. Rich
