I have a craftsman 18hp gt mower, about 18yrs old.
B&S engine. The problem I have is the idiot light is always lit, "Battery Discharging". I tried everything I could. I replaced the coil ring, low voltage sensor, etc, etc & alot stuff I cannot recall right now. I have been working on it on & off for sometime. The key switch tested fine. I don't know what else too look at or change. Could the flywheel be bad ? I tried to test the coil, when the tractor is running, I don't get very much on a meter, if at all. I test the old ring by hook it up to a small lawn mower battery, the ring became a magnet, picked up a coupl of nails, which probably prooved my point that it is still good. If anybody has any ideas I would apprciate it.
Thanks
Anthony

There is a diode in the wiring harness on the stator. Very common on briggs to fail. Yours might have a voltage regulator with the diode built in to it. You should get continuity one way ,, reverse your leads on the multi meter and you should get no continuity. If not the battery is back feeding through the stator and discharging the battery when the machine is off. This is a red wire if i remember right.

If the only problem is the light being on, ignore it, and take the bulb out. It really is a non-
issue regarding your mower. I know my response
will not suffice, but that is my opinion.
Has your battery ever really been drained? Fish

Yes, it does drain. I have no problem removing the bulb, it's that drained battery that kind of slows me down.
Thanks

By coil, do you mean the alternator? Post your
mower's and engine's model numbers so I know
what you have. Does it have an electric pto
clutch? Otherwise there should be no drain other
than starting/cranking. Do a voltage reading at
the battery before starting the engine, then
after, and note the readings here. Fish
