I'm wondering if anyone would know if a garden tractor is powerful enough to pull or push a vehicle. I operate a transmission shop with a slight incline leading into the bays. At times we find it difficult to find 3 or more people to help push a vehicle in. I was told that perhaps an 18 hp garden tractor may be strong enough. If so would a hydrostatic drive be preferable? How large a vehicle would it be capable of pushing? We often need to push a car, mini-van or perhaps a 3/4 ton pick-up. We will sometimes have a one ton cube van inside but try to leave these on the hoist without having to move them. Thanks for any tips passed on to me.

I had to move a owens cruiser on a cradel on a concrete floor and we found that a bolens with gear drive would move it without slipping, the massy harris hydrostatic would spin the wheels.

I found this to be very useful. You can buy them outright or lease them from the manufacturer

I would agree with Jim, its a matter of leverage, weld a bar on the back of a 16hp tractor, preferably gear driven. Have the bar come up at an angle that puts the chain above the car, for traction. By the way you will see garden tractors pulling planes around at many of the small rural airports..... Art

Well, the ford dealership i work at used to be a heavy truck shop, and as i have been told the ford lgt 165 hydro(kohler 16 hp single cylinder) with 2 speed differential that i bought from them 2 years ago used to do all the moving. I have put it back into mowing tilling annd snowblowing service as well as pulling a fully overloaded (very) 6 by 8 box trailer full of wood out of my wood lot! truly has a lot of pulling power.

Tim I just bought a cub cadet 107 from a tire and repair shop that used it for years to pull cars and grade the parking lot, never a complaint. It finally broke down and the owner decided the parts for the hydrostat were too expensive and sold it to me cheap.

I would recommend a 4 wheeler rather than a garden tractor. The garden tractor is just too light.

Tim, I have pulled trailers weighing 3,000 lbs. The problem with pulling cars/trucks, is weight distribution on the rear of the tractor. If you hook a chain higher on a vehicle than on the rear of the tractor, it pulls the rear of the tractor up in the air losing traction. If you get the hook low enough for traction the front end of the tractor may want to pull off the ground. I have pulled 3,000 lbs. tractors around with a 16 hp. Hydrostat lawn tractor, but that is all I would try. I would recommend a gear drive for pulling anything heavier than that.

for pushing you'd need to put on a pushbar that could take the force. I've pulled diabled cars across level grass with 12HP wheel horse. Traction will be the challenge if you are on a smooth concrete surface.
