I've had this 317 for 14 years, no problems much except a couple tines a year it starts surging, rpm's that is,pull choke 1/4 out and it stops surging. then go to shop, spray carb cleaner in top of carb, it settles out no more choke, no more surging, runs great, then sometime again this summer it will start all over again, whats the problem?, or should I just cont.spray, Tks Nat

With it running 1/2 throttle, and the air cleaner off, cover the carb top with your hand forming a good seal on the top, hold it there until it dies. This draws fuel out of the bowl backwards through all of the air jets, and washes them out. Restart with the throttle full open, as it will flood the engine when it dies. I have to do it a couple of times a year, when out mowing the pasture. My Ferguson tractor does the same thing, and the procedure works on it as well.

I have run into theses quite a bit, It can be
from stale gas has the carb varnished up or a piece of dirt has plugged one of the air bleeds inside the carburetor itself. This is quite common
for the family of 316,317,318. I would continue
with what you have been doing. Also the the intake
manifold is two sections and can also burn out the gasket making the engine surge too.

My 318's do the same thing. I believe it is some dirt in the carb. I take the top off the carb, spray B-12 carb cleaner in every hole. Then I use compressed air to blow everything dry. It works every time and doesn't cost much. JIM

I agree, bad gas, dirt, or debris that has fallen into the gas tank can find there way into the carb leaning them out causing the unit to surge. Also , the 2 piece manifold can leak, leaning the motor out causing it to surge. I work for a john deere dealer and have had this happen to a machine once>
