Craftsman tractor Electrical problem

I have a 10 year old Craftsman garden tractor that has an electical problem. When I turn the key absolutely nothing happens - no sounds at all. The battery is fine (because the lights come on when the key is first turned if the light switch is on), I replaced the starter and the ignition, I jumped the seat-switch operator presence control, and the 30-amp fuse is good. Any ideas?

I have a Craftsmen 14.5hp lawn tractor.mod 917-2507-11. Wires melted due to electric short. I have replaced all wires plus a new magneto. I have two small black wires that I don't know where they go. One from the "single spade" on the key switch, one from the brake safety switch. Engine spins fine, I have fuel, but no spark. Can you help? Thx jd

There is another safety switch on the clutch. The ignition switch could be bad or if it has an electric clutch for the deck, could be a bad switch or connection there (been there, done that one..... almost never found it)

Did you replace the starter solenoid?

You can test it by turning the key to the "run" position and then use a screwdriver or some other insulated tool to "jump" the two posts where the larger wires connect. If the starter engages, then replace the solenoid.

A less "sparky" method would be to use your volt meter if you have one.

Remove the small wire on the solenoid and insert your red probe in it then touch the black wire to the terminal where the wire was attached. Then have someone turn the key. If the meter registers 12 volts or so then the sensors are good and the solenoid is defective.

If the volt meter shows no current to the solenoid then you have additional sensors and at least one is defective. Some mowers have additional sensors on the mechanism that engages the blades and on the clutch which requires it to be depressed. Try bypassing those too.

Good luck,
Beaux
