The steering box on my 582 has too much play. I had to have the support bracket welded back on the frame and also in the process of replacing all the tie rod ends. What is the process of adjusting the slack out? Should I just rebuild the box? Is there any web sites that I can get diagrams to view?

On the side of the box where the arm is that the drag link hooks up to, you will see a nut and screw arrangement. Loosen the nut and turn the screw in a quarter-turn. Then tighten the nut. The "screw" is the cam follower for the steering. They do wear, but sometimes by turning it a quarter-turn, you get a new surface for the steering box worm gear to ride on, and it fixes the problem. Try to resist turning the screw in til it's real tight. It will seem fine, but will fail in use.

If a quarter-turn does not fix the slop, then a rebuild is likely in order. All parts are still available.

Anyone working on their Cub Cadet should have the proper service manual, which explains a great deal at a very reasonable price. Get one shipped to you by calling Cub Cadet at 1-800-800-7310, or see your dealer.
