I cannot get my Craftsman Lawn Tractor with a B&S 11HP engine to run consistently. The tractor was running great until this week then all of a sudden it died on me.

It will start and run while it is cold and as soon as it warms up it sputters and dies. the compression is 75 p.s.i.

I played with the carb for two days and got it running today. It ran for an hour while i was cutting my lawn then it sputtered and died again.

Now it is doing the same thing as before.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Steve

OK you guys. I've got an even better more basic question (just found the site). For a craftsman lawn tractor, what is the basic carb needle settings to start adjusting from?

Be honest....did you leave gas in it all winter? If so, the carburetor may be gunked up inside. You may want to remove the carb; clean it out real good with a quality carb cleaner (not gasoline) and treat her to a rebuild kit. Another common problem is mice. The little guys get up between the block and the sheet metal covers and set up house, thereby blocking the free flow of air to properly cool the engine. Other times it just blocks up with grass dirt/dust and other debris. The only real way to tell is to remove the metal covers and take a look. While you have the covers off, clean the block real good. ANYTHING stuck to it will act as insulation. It's a relatively easy chore and a 'freebie' fix to boot... if you do it yourself of course. As for the 'vacuum line' mentioned in another follow-up; I am not aware of any vacuum lines on small displacement engines; rather it is most likely a vent tube whereby crankcase gasses are introduced into the intake manifold. Good luck with the trouble shooting-MS

Hi everyone, Thanks for the responses, here is an update.

I have taken apart the carb and cleaned everything.
Removed the gas cap and cleaned out the vent.
Drained and clean the gas tank.
Put on a new coil.
replaced the fuel filter and fuel line.

After fiddling with it all weekend. IT IS STILL DOING THE SAMR THING.

I have sent it to the small engine shop and see what they were stumped as well.

I will keep yopu updated.

Thanks
Steve

P.S. Anyone wanna buy a Lawn Tractor :)

- Normally when it just up'n'dies when it gets real hot, it is the ignition parts to look for.
If it is a B&S with conventional ignition try replacing the the capacitor, If it is the 'Magnetron' type it might be the coil. Hz, Dk

Steve: A most common overlooked detail is the gas cap vent. Loosen the cap and see if it runs any longer. Check for moisture in the tank. I have seen coils act like this also.

I have checked the gas cap vent and it seems to be okay, it will not run with the gas cap loose either.

Another problem is, is that when it sits for a while gas leaks out of the bottom of the "bowl".

Again, Thanks in advance

Steve

If gas leaks out the bottom of the bowl, either you have a bad gasket, needle valve is not holding or there may be a leak around the welch plug. (looks like a small freeze plug) I usually put a small shutoff valve between the tank and carb to shut gas of when not in use.

I am having the exact same problem with a Briggs and Stratton on an old Snapper rider.
I try adjusting it, but as it warms up it dies.

I finally noticed that the carb as a vacuum hose connected to the engine and it as a large tear. I am going to try to replace it tonight and see how it goes.

Does yours have a vacuum hose setup? If so, I'll let you know how it goes.
