I recently rebuilt my 314. I ran it for a while like 20 minutes and noticed some oil on the cylinder wall fins. I pulled the head and there was some oil on top of the piston. How much oil should be reaching the top of the cylinder? I didnt think any should be up there. I gapped the rings to spec, made sure they were offset. The cylinder had been bored by a machine shop, surely the would have made sure that it wasn't out of round. I installed the oiler rings per manufacture's instructions. The piston and rings are made by rotary, I heard they were pretty good. Any one have any other ideas I can check before I go bugging the JD mower mechanic? It was smoking a little, I just thought it was becaues it was breaking in and I did oil the cylinder down good before I put the rings piston nad rings in. Any help is appreciated.

20 minutes is not very long. They will use oil till the new rings get seated.I've found it best to work the engine hard to build up some heat to help seat the rings .
