I have a 12hp vertical shaft engine that some times locks in a clockwise direction even with the starter disengaged. I can free it by moving the flywheel counter clockwise. I`ll try to start it and the engine will spin fast, stop, and try starting it but locks up again . I was going to take the engine apart but don`t know where to start. thanks, Tom

That motor has a thrown rod. You can verify that by seeing if the piston is moving while turn it over either by puling the head or turn it over by hand and put a screwdriver down the spark plug hole to feel for piston movement. You are going to have to pull the head anyways to change the rod out along with the oil pan. Need to pull out the crankshaft and see if any material from the rod is left on the crankpin. The crankpin needs to be measured for out of roundness and to see if it is within specs. Also pull the rings off the piston and measure the endgap while they sit in the bore. The bore might have a ridge on top that might keep the piston from coming out and might have to be reamed. That should get you started.
