HELP. You've been there if you're a novice like me. The lawn is out of control and you can't get the tractor fixed. I have to replace both belts in front of the engine of my Cub Cadet series 3000 riding tractor. They sit side by side on dual groove belt wheels. I got the first one on, but it is impossible to move it over to the second groove to get the second one on. Any suggestions. Anything I can loosen up to get them on?

Also, they seem to serve the same purpose (sit on the same belt wheels. Can I run it one belt? The mower turns on, rides and the blade deck activates with one belt. Am I risking damage to the engine or anything if I run on one belt?

Lastly, when I turn it on with the one belt, the engine is idling much faster than before. At one fourth speed it seems as loud and fast as full strength before. It feels like it's going jump right out of the tractor. Plus there is some metallic dinging (as if something were loose) that seems to go away when I turn on the blades and comes back when I turn the blades off. Thoughts?

While it requires a little disassembly, after some guards are removed (primarily the one around the drive pulley), the rear belt can be replaced - I just did it. Don't know anything about running w/ only 1 belt - in theory, it doesn't look like it would make a difference, but I'm not a qualified Cub Cadet mechanic (I do hold an A&P license to work on airplanes, though). I hope your yard isn't weeds by now...
