I have a Craftsman garden tractor with a 15.5 Hp Kohler engine that dies within the first fifteen minutes of use. It won't restart until it cools down and it doesn't seem to have the power it did before this problem began. Thank you in advance for any attemps at advice. All is appreciated.

The coil was the problem. I took it off and found that it had a small crack around the terminal and when I replaced it the engine ran great. Thanks to all for the help.

I had a friend that had a Craftsman with a similar problem. His was caused by vapor lock in the carb. The heat from the engine would cause the air in the bowl to expand and shut the fuel flow off to the engine. This can be cured by making a small heat shield out of some scrap sheet metal to protect the carburator bowl from heat.

Do you still have spark when it dies? If not the other problem could be a crack in the coil, plug wire, spark plug etc. that opens up as the engine warms up. You can check this by tracking back to the coil for electrical power when the engine dies.

Hope these two ideas help.

Good Luck

I have a snapper mower with a 20 hp Kohler that did the same thing. Replaced the coil & no problem after a year of use. It was about 7 years old when it went bad.
