I have a Briggs 5 hp vertical shaft on a mini bike and it has one of those junk carbs that fits in the tank. Its not getting gas and I think the tank is shot (I have two other engines like this and they are in the same state). Is there a carb off of a push mower or something that I can swap this for and use another gas tank? I dont know what briggs was thinking when they came up with this set up. I think it's a poor combination. Thanks

This is actually a very common setup and almost every go Kart racer is beating the bushes looking for these. Take the tank and have the inside sand blasted to remove the rust. As Bob stated replace the feul pump on the side of the carb. I recommend replacing the spring as well as the diaphram. Finally check the tubes that extend into the tank. There is a screen on the bottom of each one that can easily get plugged with junk from the tank. Also they are either brass or plastic. If they are brass go ahead and just replace them. More than likely they are corroded shut inside. If they are plastic check to see if they are cracked somewhere. If they are they won't draw gas properly. It's another cheap fix. They only run about $2.00 each from your Briggs dealer.

The design works pretty well, but as pointed out, old gas can plug things up. There are two thing you need to check. In some of the older ones there is a check ball in the tube that goes to the bottom of the tank. Make sure this check ball if free and that gas can get through the tube. There is also a diaphragm fuel pump built into the side of some of these carbs, and old gas can cause these to stick and not pump fuel. Replacements are about $1. Other than that, these things work pretty well. There's millions of 'em out there running just fine, with very little maintenence ever done to them.

the real bad combination is when you leave untreated gas in the tank to turn bad and then rust the tank..lucas
