A friend of mine who is not internet savy recently purchased a new 46" Murray with a Briggs & Stratton 21 hp two cylinder. After working under a load or perhaps just from reaching operating temprature, it will backfire when switched off. It is quite loud and may occur as late as several seconds after the engine has stopped turning. It has on several occasions backfired twice. This is the second B&S 21hp that I am aware of that does this. Is it the nature of the beast or can it be remedied. Squirrels are falling out of the trees around there thinking it must be hunting season. Thanks in advance for your time and advice,
Randy

This is a common occurance (not just on Briggs engines) and is perfectly normal. Unburned gasoline enters the hot muffler and detonates after the engine has shut down. To reduce the occurance, allow the engine to idle for a few minutes before shutting it off. This allows temperatures to stabilize and helps to cool things off a little. I usually allow my tractors to idle while I am cleaning them up after use.

Shutting down a hot air cooled engine without a cool down period (I am told) does nothing to prolong its life. One of my Wheel Horses ran out of gas years ago while cutting really tall grass on a 100 degree day. The engine temporarly froze up until temperatures equilibrated. Idling down solved this.

Thanks Steve,I passed your words of wisdom on to my friend Kenny who sends his thanks and tells me that he has been switching it off thirty seconds or less after idling down. He's relieved, knowing that it's probably a case of pilot error and the squirrels were thrilled to learn that they won't be spending their nuts on ear plugs and tranquilizers all summer.

If he is running full throttle, tell him to pull it back to idle for 5 minutes and let it cool down before shutting it off (it's better for the engine anyway). Could be that the carb is set too lean making the engine run too hot. Also if he has the throttle in wide open position the mixture is flowing, turn off the spark and it gets all the way to the muffler before going bang. I've gotten into the habbit of letting it idleing to cool down, while its doing that I get the leaf blower and clean the whole thing off. - Slughammer

Thanks for the education Slughammer. I passed it on to my friend Kenny who sends his thanks as well. He guessed that he has been switching it off around thirty seconds or less after idling down, so it was still hotter than a road lizard in a flannel shirt. If it continues, we'll twist the recipe up a notch and see how it dwells. Thanks again for sharing what you know.

Randy,

I had a neighbor with the same thing happening... his Briggs & Stratton isn't a 21 HP, but it was doing the same thing. I am not aware of how long it did this, but it has since quit on it's own. Normal? I don't know. But, it did quit.

I know I didn't help you any information wise, but maybe for moral support lol. I hope your squirrels get used to the noise!
