I know this site is for garden tractors. Does garden tillers fall under that designation too? I have an old sears garden tiller and the chain has rubbed through the housing in two places. Can I simply cut away the guard in those areas and keep it lubed with chain oil? Dirt bikes run in worse conditions all the time without an enclosed housing over the chain. Am I not thinking this through correctly?

If the housing is sheet metal and not aluminum or pot metal, I would weld or braze patches on. It doesn't have to be pretty to work. You also probably need to take care of the chain tightness adjustment that allowed the chain to rub in the first place too.

The tiller transmission uses a grease & not oil. Sears calls it Plastilube but a lithium grease will work. The transmission is more than just a chain running around a sprocket like a dirt bike. Dirt & dust that gets in there will end up causing problems with the needle bearings & the nylon shaft bearings etc. Don't know why the chain wore a hole in the housing, it shouldn't be that loose to rub. If the transmission is still running fine I would pump in some grease & patch the hole as others have suggested. Splitting that tranny is a real pita.

Use sheet metal as previously mentioned, drill 1/8 holes and use pop rivets, maybe silicone the edges before installation.

Patch up the cover and get a new chain.

Can you make a "bandade" out of a piece of heavy tin, gasket, #1 permetex and small bolts or screws?
