314 lack of power

I recently rebuilt my 314 and it seems to be running pretty good, but when I kick on the pto that engages the mower deck it really bogs the engine down? I've adjusted the pto to .015 and put new belts on the mower deck. The blades and idler pulley seems to spin fairly easy. I'm at a loss here? I bought this from an old fellow and I used to mow his yard with it. It would mow at almost top speed. Over the years it started loosing power and developed a knock, which is why I rebuilt it. I had the crank turned, new rod wrist pin, piston, rings, valves. The end play on the crank and cam were good. Rings were gapped correctly. Guess I'll check the compression maybe the head was warped thats the only thing I didn't check. Would that cause a power loss under a load?? Thanks for looking.

A general lack of power or engine loading problem, as you desribe is most tracable to the carb. Rebuild it if it hasn't been done in few years. Tune it as per factory spec. (as the oldest mechanic at your dealer).

A poor spark is the next most common problem. Examine the plug and replace it if it ain't perfect. Examine the point if you got 'em.

Most likely it is a little of both. As always fresh gas, too, and an oil change.

Rick,

Suggest you check the following per the service manual.

Carb. linkage at full open
governor setting & spring tension
set timing
set high speed carb. setting
check RPM at full open, with hand held, I found it to be the best.

My 400 was doing the samne thing, kand it took me along time to find out the problem. It was a blocked fuel filter in the tank. Under a full load it was not getting enough gas to keep the RPM up

I hope this helps.

Rick, I have a 314, and it has pretty good power. Like yours it does shudder when you engage the PTO if the engine is running slow. It is much happier if you keep the engine speed up. I think big single cylinder engines shake at low speeds just by their nature. You should have good power though if you keep the rpm's up. I would check the head and head gasket. I have bar tread tires on mine and use a front blade and it never really labors. It will spin the tires easily even with the 75 lb weights on each back wheel. If you recently rebuilt the engine I think I would try to avoid an engine swap if possible. Good Luck, Mark R.
