Hello, I just bought a real cream puff. An Ariens GT17 series 931. Bought it AS-IS not running. It has a Kohler KT17S motor. I am glad to report it has a big sticker that says "series II" on it. From what I've read the series one's had some problems of throwing rods when on hillsides. So far I know the battery is junk, and I had to replace the battery terminal ends on the two cables. I found it would not start because the little lift pump was bone dry inside, so I primed the line by forcing fuel into the little hose on the pump output, and shazam! IT started. The whole tractor starting shaking so violently, I throttled down quick, and investigated. The rear PTO shaftruns through a large bearing, this bearing is no longer mounted in place, the plate it appears to have been held in place by, now has a grossly oversized, damaged hole, so the shaft just slams around, making a racket. WhatI don't get, is why it is turning at all. The PTO switch for the rear is off! Is it normal for these to "free wheel" even if off with no load on them? The switch appears to wotk, because if it is in the on position, and you get off the seat, the safety circuit kills the motor. My other big isue is the motor itself. I confirmed both cylinders are firing, but it seems to be ruunning rough. For a motor that's supposed to be "balanced" it sure vibrates like an old Harley. And does it smell! I think it is running way too rich, but I'm not sure on how to adjust this carb, it is not one I've worked on before. I can see the idle stop set screw, then I see what looks like 2 mixture screws. Annybody want to try and talk me through set-up on this beast? Oh yeah, almost forgot, the neutralizer pedal does not do squat. The manual says it is supposed to stop, or slow the machine. the only way I can get it to stop is to bring the hand lever to neutral, then let it roll tio a stop. ( the brakes also appear shot). Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Check Kohler's website. They have user's manuals for almost all of their engines. You can purchase shop manuals from them too.
