My wife's father bought her a Sears II 18hp lawn tractor a few years ago before we were married (I could not stop him he's true blue Sears aholic). Anyway, It ran fine first few years but within last year it runs about 10 min. then belches smoke or backfires and quits. Kohler engine cranks but will not fire. Anyone have an idea?

To get it to fire try this.

Take the top off the mower and get some sand paper and a Metal screwdriver. Use the screwdriver and on the round wheel under the plate go around till the screwdriver is cought by a magnet. Take the sandpaper and sand the rust off the magnet. Be sure to get on the side. Next There is a device where the sparkwire plug goes. It has to things sticking out sand the rust off the side facing the flywheel you sanded earlier.
Put the top back on and see if it gets fire. If not.

Replace the spark plug. If it still doesn't work.

Take the top back off, the device the spark plug wire comes off of take Allen wrenches and take it off. Go to a Lawnmower shop and get it replaced put it back on and hook up the sparkplug.

If you have any problems call me @ 1-706-549-2345

This should work Goodluck.

also while you have the flywheel off check to see that the keyway on the shaft isnt sheared off
if its sheared or badly bent replace it

if this is a magnum 18 kohler it could be several things.the mag or coil under the flywheel shroud could be defective.the ground wire to the mag may be shorting between mag and switch.it could be a bad switch, and i mean key,pto or safety switch.to eliminate mag start mower and unplug mag ground wire, white one i think.if it keeps running after that it is a switch or shorting out problem.the vertical shaft is easier to replace mag than horizontal.the air space for mag is app..012.
