Bolens QT16 Problem

I have a Bolens QT16 garden tractor that's beginning to give me problems. Starts easy, runs fine, except after 30-60 minutes of run time it stops running. Let it cool off and she'll start and run some more. It's not using engine oil, but needed transmission fluid this spring.

Could the hydro drive be going and causing these problems?

Any ideas would be welcomed. I have many attachments for this tractor (mower, blower, tiller, plow) and to purchase reasonable replacements is not an option.

I can supply more information if needed.

Our QT has a hole in the transmission case. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix it, short of replacing it? Takes more than a quart of transmission fluid to mow our large yard. Repaired with JB Weld many years ago, but leak has returned worse than ever. Is there an epoxy that might withstand the pressure?

Jeff, sorry I didn't see this sooner!! I hope you didn't sell your QT. mine was doing the exact same thing. REPLACE YOUR COIL!! It sits down in the blower housing and gets really, really hot. very common problem with the Onan engine. (I'm assuming you have an Onan) I got a new one at a tractor junkyard for 50.00, your local dealer will probaly want 75.00 or better. ps. I need a universal from PTO to mower shaft any help? good luck!!

Jeff, I too have seen this happen with a "hot coil" and have seen the coil mounted elsewhere so as not to get so much engine heat. Also for Matt that responed & asked the driveline question, My QT now has new u-joints & shafts that are greaseable & repairable & made in the USA thanks to Bobby Bruno in SC. This guy knows Bolens well & has the parts. His number is 843-889-8377.

Hey Jeff,

I can't really think of any ideas for you. I also have a QT-16 and I have no troubles with it (however, the engine was replaced in 1988). I don't really think the problem is with your hydrostatic drive. Maybe try running it without the hood on and side covers on (for engine heat reduction - I know mine gets hot!) and see if it runs any longer than with the hood on. I'm certainly no expert, but may that will set you in a direction that will help you come up with other ideas to troubleshoot it.

Good luck,

Hans
