My 314 won't start unless I jump it. It will run after that. If the battery was bad, why would it run after being jump started? I thought it has to have a battery to run also.

No, the alternator, generator or magneto will supply suficent power to run the tractor. I'll bet the lights even work.

The jump will also supply the initial field voltage needed to get the alternator going.

Then why does it die when I pull one of the cables of the battery?

Something has to be providing the juice to keep the tractor running - Battery or charging system.

The facts don't all agree here so we need to go back to the trougleshooting basics.

1.) why is the battery bad? If you were to charge up the battery would it hold a charge? a battery with even a hint of life can keep a tractor running - it just won't start it.

2.) Connect a voltmeter to the battery with the tractor running - battery should be in a charged state. 13v marginal-14v is good(charging ok) - 12v is bad (battery voltage - no charging).

I think that your battery is not completely dead and that the charging system has failed. Starting and running your tractor ran down the battery to where it can't turn over the engine.

I think a good charge will seemingly fix everything for a short period of time only to return to where you are now. You can repeat this but to really fix the proble requires some skill and the manuales with test procedures

It probably just means the charging system of the tractor is working, since it can provide enough power for it to run the ignition system.

Chances are your starter doubles as an alternator as well as a starter.

If your engine has magneto ignition it will run with no battery.
