Need to know type and how much lubricant goes in the unit on a cub model 1730. This is the unit containing the gears directly under the pulley and cooling fan that sits under the battery. Owners manual does not give any info. Would greatly appreciate any information anyone can give me. Thanks in advance..Danny

Danny:

I have the Service manual. I assume that you are referring to the "input" shaft on the transaxle. The pulley from the engine mounts to this shaft, right? This is called the "input assembly. The manual says to pack it with 5 ounces of "Durino-O type grease" before remounting the input shaft. I just used a high grade bearing grease on my 1720.

wrong. input and output shaft are located under the pump. when pump is removed you'll find two couplings. one is input to pump and the other is output to transmission. grease both of these with a really good grease because they aren't something you'll likely get back to in quite a while because of their location.

... it's the best for yer Cub. You can get it from any Case IH dealership. Cub dealers may have it under another name, too.

Also, when ya change the filter, make sure ya get a hydraulic filter; a regular car oil filter, while it may fit, will not filter out enough dirt.

this unit seems to be separate from the hydrostatic drive fluid. the hydro is full and this box looks like it has been bone dry since 1962. was wondering if maybe it packs in some type of special grease instead of having a fluid? thanks for your input on the hytran

re glenn(WV)...have the owners manual and all it says pertaining to the transaxle is refer to your dealer.,,just looked on an exploded parts view that I obtained and they call it a transmission instead of a transaxle.
