I have a Bolens Lawn tractor that is suddenly breaking mower deck belts within an hour or so after replacing them. My 13 year old son was driving it when the first one broke, so I'll probably never know what happened. He said nothing happened, it just broke...

I replaced it the first time and with the boy driving again, the new belt broke within 10 minutes. OK, so I replaced it again, and this time I drove it. I noticed a lot side to side vibration between pulleys which could not be corrected by adding more tension - I run out of adjustment. After about 20 minutes, I started having trouble with the belt flipping (twisting) between 3 of the pulleys. This happened about 5 times before the belt finally broke.

I have noticed this belt vibration before, but maybe not quite this severe. Is this the symptom to be keying on? Any other ideas?

Gary

An ordinary run of the mill black belt will stretch under these conditions. You MUST use an industerial, or heavy duty belt. These will be of a white or (use to be) green color. These belts have a strong cord construction and will not stretch as the black ones do. This is a problem that I know about personally. We put one of these belts on our mower and it outlasted the mower. Around here we can get them from the local NAPA store.

Check for a rock wedged in one of the pulleys.

are you buying lawnmower belts or are you trying to use automotive belts?automotive belts will not handle shock load of driving a mower deck.after you find cause of vibration check to see you don't have a bent or badly worn pulley.

Check to see if the blades are out of balance. Any of them got a lot of dried up grass and crud built up on them? An out of balance blade will vibrate.

If the belt turns over it usually means it does not fit the pulley groove properly, or it is not routed correctly.
