Push mower stalled while cutting tall grass. Now I can't get the mower started because it is almost impossible to pull the starter cord. This is a SEARS mower with a Briggs and Stratton engine. I can pull the cord a short distance and then the cord "pulls back". The one time my husband almost got it started by pulling super hard, white smoke came out of the muffler exhaust. It the motor "toast"?..any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have a sheared flywheel key. Remove the Blower housing from the top of the engine and then take off the bolt or nut or clutch that holds on the flywheel. You should be able to see if the key is sheared. 10 to 1 this is your problem.

Firstly check the key again. Most of the time you really have to look closely as the part that shears is not all that big. The only other thing I can think of is Grass packed in under the deck, or an intake valve is tight. The clearance on the intake (3hp) should be .005"-.007". As a final thought did you hit something? You may have twisted and bent your crankshaft.

take the whole cord pull section off the top to where you are at the flywheel with the bolt showing--take the spark plug out. use a rachet wrench and turn the bolt until it frees.put it back together and try it again.worked for me.
