I inherited a Craftsman 12HP 38" lawn tractor 3
years ago. It was leaking oil badly so it has sat
in the garage for a couple of years. I tore into
the engine and replaced gaskets/O rings in the
area of the OHV and head. I suspect that the
valve guides are worn but I will see what happens
with the new seals. I noticed that I was having a
problem with the starter failing to pop up to its
full height and engage the flywheel gears. At
first I thought it was a starter problem, but I
could not be sure that the battery was fully
charged. I pulled my car's battery and hooked it
up to the tractor battery cables(never try to jump
the smaller battery with the larger, the smaller
may overcharge and explode!) The car battery
caused the starter to fully engage the flywheel
and crank the engine, so I know that the starter
is OK and the battery needs more trickle charging
or I need a new battery. The reason I post this
is because I saw a Y2K thread about the starter
not popping up to engage the flywheel. I guess
people assumed that the battery was good, because
they were recommending tearing into the starter,
etc. Hope this helps someone...Bob
