Crack in transaxle

Yesterday, I started to mow my lawn when all of a sudden the tractor stopped and would not move. It is still under warranty as I just purchased it less than 6 months ago. I can't seem to get in touch with the manufacturer due to the holiday weekend. I looked at the transaxle, and it was covered with fluid and I noticed a crack right through the center. I know I didn't hit any rocks. But the weather has been kind of wacky. The temperature during the past week has ranged from 60 - 110. Does anyone know if the temperature may have caused this crack. It looks like it may have been a stress crack or a crack due to a defect in the transmission.

What make of tractor is it? If it has one of the cheaper aluminum transaxles (which most newer ones do), then cracks are common. These transaxles do not stand up to much abuse, especially if they have a hairline crack to begin with. They are made primarily for mowing on smooth surfaces that put little stress on the transmission housing. I don't think the temperature would have much to do with it, unless you went from well below freezing to 100 degrees within a minute or so. You should be able to get it replaced under warrenty.
