I have a B$S 6.5 HP that I had just put on a troy bilt tiller and then ran low on oil. Very dumb thing to do I know. So the question is how to repair. Prices for replacing the crank and rod and head gasket are $82. Has anyone sucessfully pulled the crank cleaned it and then cleaned up the connecting rod (assuming it is not bent) and got an engine to run?

Depends on what seized up, main bearing, rod bearing, piston in cylinder. You'll have to take it apart and find out. I've had a few that had seized bearings, cleaned and polished the crankshaft where the aluminum stuck to it. Had to hone out a main bearing since it shrunk and crankshaft would not fit back in with proper clearance. If you have an aluminum bore cylinder and you melted/scored that then you will have to rebore it for new piston. If just the big end of the rod stuck to the crank thorw you probably will get by with cleaning up the crank throw and a new con rod. You are just going to have to take it apart and find out what stuck and how much damage was done. Also.....some of those Troy-bilt tillers had engines with specially calibrated dipsticks so they would have the proper oil level in the engine because of the tilt of the enigne when the tiller is operating in the ground.

you can also try some oil down the plug hole and a pipewrench on the crank pulley. NOT the best thing to do but it worked for me. it broke loose and ran for along time after.

That's exactly what I did too and got the same results. It's running great but not sure for how long. I thought I would give it a try. We've got a whole pile of snow and need to use it now.

Hi Marvin, you will need to take the engine apart and check the damage. Check specs. with measuring caliper. If a part remains within tolerances and is not scored or otherwise damaged you should be able to reuse it....good luck..Art
