This machine stops cranking when it hits compression. If you hold the key to start, it will eventually continue cranking. The motor itself is rebuilt and runs great when it stsrts. I had the starter/generator rebuilt, new battery, and checked the wiring.I feel it may still be a starter problem. Any help would be appreciated.

The engine has a compression release function which may not be working properly. Unfortionatly the engine would need to be torn down to inspect this. First I would check two things. 1) Valve clearance. 2) Ignition timing.

Also check your battery and starter cables and terminals.

Good Luck,
K-Mo

The compression release can be checked WITHOUT tearing the motor down. Take off the cam cover and check for two things, the vee shaped spring which retracts the ACR mechanism and the actual ACR "tab" which holds the exhaust valve lifter open about .035 on the compression stroke under 600 rpm. Broken springs and broken off tabs will cause hard starting. If you are unclear what to look for, the easiest way is to just take the head off and confirm that the exhaust valve is indeed opening on the compression stroke. This can all be done with the motor still in the tractor.

Good Luck,

Kenny
