Ouch, just finished converting a Craftsman Lawn tractor over from 11.5 HP single cyl to the 14HP Twin Vll Briggs. I should have checked it over closer before the conversion cause as soon as I got it started I noticed no power/compression in 1 cyl. I removed the head and found the exhaust valve seat loose and flopping around the exhaust valve. Has anyone an opinion on potential for repair or installing a new seat that will not repeat the problem? I have not removed the valve for a closer inspection of the seating surfaces in the head/block but looks like it has been pounded over a bit in the machined seat area of the block.

Any ideas or history for this type of problem and repair.

Thanks for you advice

I would see if the machined seating area is damaged. If so, take it to a machine shop, they should be able to fix it. As for putting the seat back in, new seat, remove it from the valve and put it back where it goes, then go around valve seat on the outside about an 1/8 of an inch with a center punch starting with punch marks 180 degrees around the seat, then split the difference in half for each mark, moving 180 degrees each time. This just helps to lock the seat in place.
