I have replaced the fuel pump, coil, spark plug, and cleaned the carb four times. Fuel is flowing freely from tank to fuel pump. Almost seems like a vapor lock type problem. Let sit for 20 minutes or so and it runs like a champ for another 20 minutes or so and then dies. Will restart and run roughly under full choke only unless you let is sit a while. Fuel filter not clogged and fuel cap is new (not creating a vacuum preventing fuel flow - also left loose to see if that was problem). Can't think of what else to check.

I'm having the same problem with mine, both the shutting down after 20-30 minutes and the PTO engagement not working after about the same time. The local dealer has the tractor and says the electric clutch is bad causing the PTO failure and the coil is bad causing the shut down. They tell me the engine needs to be removed to replace the coil. The estimate is $500-$600!!!! Last Cub for me.

Guess What??? I have a 2000 model 2135 and I have been experiencing this same problem for about a year. It has really been a major pain. Mine will start to die and I can pull the choke and get another five minutes before it dies completely. Recently, after reaching the end of my rope, I concluded the fuel filter had very little gas in it when this event took place. I then remove the filter from the line and used a straight pipe and got another hour of run time before the event took place again. I concluded the fuel pump was failing to draw properly when the engine became hot. I'm about to order a fuel pump, but I can't find the engine model on this 13hp engine! Anyone know where it is?

I had the same problem last year. The problem turned out to be the elctronic ignition. The part cost about $60 and took a couple of hours to install. The engine has run great ever since.

it may be over heating check the choke adjust screw maby it is hitting to high of an rpm causing it to over heat and when yyou let it sit it cools allowing it to run nicly again for 20 min.

I have also re-routed the fuel line to remove the possibility of a vapor lock being created in the fuel (metal) line. This didn't resolve the problem. I've also been told to check the compression cold and hot to see if there is perhaps a "heat induced" loss. I am beginning to think the blade control component (electrical module - push/pull switch) may be part of the problem. It just stopped working also..

Ed,

Thanks for the info. I have replaced the equivalent component on this Kohler 13hp (coil). If you have additional suggestions, I would appreciated hearing them as well.

Thanks for the suggestions Jim S., ironhead, and KennyW. I'll start working through these to see if I can get the problem cleared. I'll post another followup to let you know how it goes.

Could be electrical...a connection opening up when things warm up. When it happens next, immediately pull the plug, lay it on the engine and crank it to see if you get fire across it. If you don't, you know it's somewhere in the ignition system or the power circuit supplying it.

try placing a barier between carb and motor. i had same problem with an old sears awhile back, i used a piece of aluminum about the thickness of sheet metal and that fixed it. i have no idea why it started to happen after 30 some years of working just fine. good luck

To add to Ironhead's suggestion, there are 2 gaskets available for the carb, one is flat paper, the other is a phenolic spacer, about 1/4 inch thick. The thicker one acts like an insulator from engine heat and helps prevent vapor lock. Try it out. Mine works ok with the flat gasket but I don't have side panels or an enclosed engine compartment.
