I started my tractor then it died. I can't get it to start again. It's a 15.5hp Briggs. I got sparks, lots of gaz, compression looks good but I didn't check with a compression gauge. Checked the owner's manual and it tells you to have the valve cheched at an authorized repair center. Any ideas ?

Mine runs and then acts as if its starving for gas and dies, after running for quite a while. My battery finally went dead after tring to get it started.

Replaced fuel filter, oil filter with oil change, spark plug, air filter. Currently going to buy a new battery....

Spark plug was the last item that was replaced when the problem started and it appeared to fix the problem, but now is dieing again.

Web pages at Sears indicate that the carbarator needs to be checked/maintained, how does one do this?

I have a craftsman riding lawnmower (12hp) that won't start. It has gas, oil and a new sparkplug. When you turn the key it will act like it wants to start, but won't. The battery is good. Why won't it start?

I'm also working on a B&S 15.5 Hp OHV. Has been hard to start for the last few months. Battery is good, at least it starts another mower with no appreciable voltage drop. Starter seems powerful enough, but when spinning the engine it will often kick back when approaching top dead center. Turning the flywheel by hand it seems as if the compression release is not working. If the engine fires it runs fine. This is a well maintained engine, has had no problems, kept under shelter, etc. I am going to adjust valves and go from there. A poster in another forum suggests adjusting valves, but probably will have to replace camshaft to get a higher compression release lobe.

Same problem, but we noticed that under the fuel filter there is a sensor and it is very hot, without the engine being started, is this another problem? Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Thanks Art, yeah I checked the key because I had problems with that about a year ago after replacing the ring gear on the flywheel. Had a hard time getting that nut tight. That was one of the first things I looked at, but the grooves in the shaft and flywheel are still line up. Got me a valve cover gasket this morning and Monday morning the rocker arm cover is coming off.

Pascal, can you give us more info? Was the tractor sitting for a long time? Did it run well and just quit? Did it backfire? Was it smoking? Did you do anything different with it, like leave it out in the rain, maintenance, etc...Art
