kohler is the better engine, at least in my experience. they are reliable and long-lasting. I have had both briggs and kohlers that were 30 yrs old, guess which ran better... every kohler I've ever had has been an excellent engine.

Kyle: While I don't yet have experience with the Briggs 'Diamond' series, I must say that it would have to be somewhat better than their other recent models to equal the Kohler Command. My experience and that of my Kohler (and Briggs and Tecumseh) distributor is that they are a very good and trouble-free design. For what it's worth.
Best regards, Fred

My personal opinion I would say the Kohler best but parts are spendy for them, however you will get many years of good service out of the Briggs as well.

KOHLER IS HANDS DOWN THE BETTER MOTOR. I HAVE A 582 WITH 16 HP BRIGGS THAT CONSTANTLY PUTS GAS IN THE OIL. THAT IS WHAT RUINED THE FIRST ENGINE , THE NEW ONE HAS A COUPLE HUNDRED HOURS ON IT AND IS DOING THE SAME THING

Choosing between Kohler and Briggs. Kohler is best except for the vertical shaft models. The vertical shaft models have carboration problems due to the EPA making the small engine industry lean their engine fuel supply down. They will run pretty good if you close the choke a little to help them get more fuel. Briggs has a better running vertical shaft than Kohler. Kohler has a better running Horizontal shaft than Briggs.

I think even the vertical shaft Kohler engine is better. I have a Yard Man with a Kohler Command 15 engine that I've had for about 10 years. I've NEVER had any problems of any kind. It still runs like the day I bought it. My neighbor has a MTD (they're just alike just different color) that has an 14.5 Briggs I/C OHV engine that threw a rod out the side and he had to replace the engine once and even now his 3 year old Briggs won't run very good. My vote is definetly for Kohler!
